COVID-19 Testing at ADOC Facilities
The Alabama Department of Corrections began listing testing numbers at state facilities on April 1, 2020 on their website here. However, the low number of tests administered still does not account for even 1% of the population at any facility, even though the overcrowding at these facilities increases the likelihood of spread. Furthermore, these facilities house many people aged 65 and older, who are at a significantly higher risk of severe health complications if they contract COVID-19.
Given these risks and recent news reports that widespread infection and deaths are expected, on April 6, we called on state leaders to address the increasing risk to incarcerated peoples, including by releasing certain vulnerable, high risk populations from prison. Read our full press release here.
